SOMETIMES, PURSUING THE COMPANY AND NOT THE POSITION CAN COST YOU THE JOB
Lauren, a college senior with a passion for retail, wanted to start her career at Bloomingdale’s, one of the most respected companies in the field. She had done her homework and was ready to do whatever it took to work for this blue-chip company. She went in for an interview and told the HR director that she would be happy joining either of their two training programs, one for merchandising, the other for store operations. This turned out to be a mistake.
The HR manager said that the two training programs were so different no one could possibly be interested in both. She was put off that Lauren had not come into the conversation with a sense of which program was right for her. Lauren wanted to start her career at Bloomingdale’s, and she was willing to do so in either training program—but that wasn’t what the interviewer wanted to hear.
The lesson here is that while getting into the right company may be a wise strategy, you still need to have a well-developed sense of what specifically you want to do at the company. Even if you don’t really mind, you still need to be able to make the case not just for “Why Bloomingdale’s?” but “Why this specific job?”
